The Gary Newspaper Guild: The Last Decade

p15846coll76

About this collection

After decades of serving the employees of The Post-Tribune newspaper, the Gary Newspaper Guild closed shop in 2011. Dealing with dwindling members from numerous layoffs and and a struggle to continue to effectively serve its membership, the guild, based in Northwest Indiana, voted to merge with the Chicago Newspaper Guild. This digital collection seeks to preserve and spread access to the GNG's history, particularly items relating to its last decade and the story of how the guild decided to merge with Chicago. The collection also helps tell broader stories involving Northwest Indiana, unions and the newspaper industry during the first decade of the 21st Century. Items in the collection include contracts, minutes from guild meetings and bargaining sessions, communications with the company, photos of guild events and oral history interviews with guild members.
