This collection consists of biographical and genealogical information of Alice Kirk Grierson. Alice Grierson was married to Benjamin H. Grierson, who was a general in the Civil War and later reentered the Army as a Colonel and lead the "Buffalo Soldiers" in the Tenth Cavalry. She lived at Fort Concho in San Angelo, Texas. Many letters were written by her and her husband and other family members. This collection will represent a small number of the letters and the struggles that she and her family faced during her life from 1828-1888. Alice Grierson suffered the loss of children at very young ages and two of her children suffered from manic-depressive psychosis. She dealt with issues that arose because her husband was in charge of all black regiments and his strong views on treating Indians more humane. Through all of this Alice became an extremely strong woman.
